Project Objective:

To enhance water availability for wildlife and promote biodiversity in the Turahalli Minor Forest, Bengaluru.

Project Summary:

Honeycomb Retail India collaborated on a project to restore and improve two waterholes within the Turahalli Minor Forest. This initiative aimed to create a more sustainable water source for the forest ecosystem.

Location:

Turahalli Minor Forest, VGMF+FXQ, Thurahalli, Bengaluru

Specific Locations:

Bunds 1, Bunds 2 , Bunds 3 , Bunds 4

Area Covered:

1.5 acres

Restoration Methods:

  • Desilting of water holes: This process significantly increased the water storage capacity by removing accumulated sediment.
  • Repair and Strengthening of Bunds: Earthen embankments surrounding the waterholes were meticulously repaired to prevent leaks and fortified with additional soil for improved durability against erosion.
  • Waste Weir Restoration: The spillway was expertly restored to effectively manage excess water flow and prevent overflow.
  • Stone Pitching at Outlets: Outlet channels were lined with stones to mitigate erosion and ensure controlled water flow.

Impact:

  • Increased Water Availability: The restored waterholes will hold more water, providing a reliable source for wildlife throughout the year, particularly during dry seasons.
  • Enhanced Habitat Quality: A consistent water supply will improve the overall habitat quality for various animal species, promoting biodiversity within the forest.
  • Erosion Control: The strengthened bunds and stone-pitched outlets will minimize erosion, protecting the integrity of the waterholes and surrounding areas.
  • Sustainable Ecosystem: This project contributes to a more sustainable ecosystem within the Turahalli Minor Forest, benefiting all its inhabitants.

Outcome:

Honeycomb Retail India's initiative demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship. By restoring the Turahalli Forest waterholes, they have ensured a vital water source for wildlife and contributed to the long-term health of the forest ecosystem.
